Neighborhood Centers

Current Services:

  • Our 39 neighborhood centers offer safe and welcoming locations for communities to come together for education, music, worship, day care, recreation and more.
  • These centers directly serve New Yorkers in need, providing food, clothing, rent and utility assistance and other essential services on site.
  • In order to keep up with the growing demand for services, we are investing in the operational upkeep of these sites, so that our centers are ready to safely and efficiently meet human need at all times.

Goal: Raise $27 million to continue providing New Yorkers with vibrant neighborhood centers while improving the quality of our services.

Domestic Violence Intervention

Current Services:

  • The Franklin Women’s Shelter houses up to 6,500 women per year, many of whom are the victims of domestic violence. They receive counseling and about 90% of clients are placed in stable living situations.
  • Roughly 90% of all residents of our family shelters are single mothers with children, who are often fleeing abusive situations. The Briarwood Family Shelter offers domestic violence support groups to help with the healing process.
  • The Bronx Young Mothers Program helps pregnant girls and women ages 16 to 25 learn how to become responsible parents and prevent potentially abusive situations. They receive housing placement, job training and donations like diapers and cribs.

Goal: Raise $3 million to help more vulnerable families escape abusive situations and live stable lives.

Music & Creative Arts Programs

Current Services:

  • Each week, we give 875 classes in music, drama, dance and other creative arts.
  • The Greater New York Youth Band and Youth Chorus provides the opportunity for young people to develop their talent, perform large concerts and even release recordings.

Goal: Raise $7 million to provide more children and youth with opportunities to broaden their horizons through creative activities.

Rent, Utility & Basic Needs Assistance

Current Services:

  • Nearly all of our community centers offer short-term financial help with rent and mortgage payments so at-risk families do not end up on the streets.
  • 30 community centers also offer long-term utility assistance for families to pay for heat, water, gas and electric bills and provide job and finance counseling to help them transition to independence.
  • We also help clients obtain crucial medical prescriptions and eyeglasses so they can stay healthy and independent.

Goal: Raise $8 million to support the everyday well-being of more struggling New Yorkers.

Star Lake Recreation Complex

Current Services:

  • Each year, 800 children attend this classic summer camp, where they can swim in a lake, do arts and crafts, learn about wildlife, play sports, hike the trails, sing around a campfire and make new friends.
  • We hold intensive music camps for our Youth Band to hone their skills in a naturally beautiful setting.
  • For children in our HIV Services program, we offer a special retreat during the summer, as well as a week-long Family Respite Camp for families affected by HIV.
  • Star Lake also hosts numerous getaways each year for senior citizens, women, men and Salvation Army officers to come together for fellowship and recreation.

Goal: Raise $3 million to allow more children, seniors and adults alike to experience the joy of nature.

Hunger Relief

Current Services:

  • We operate soup kitchens, distribute grocery vouchers and food packages and do street outreach through our mobile canteens.
  • Last year we served nearly 2 million meals and distributed nearly 350,000 bundles of groceries.

Goal: Raise $15 million to help us feed more people than ever before.

Homeless Services

Current Services:

  • Shelters provide three hot meals a day, showers, clothing and basic medical care.
  • Residents receive employment counseling, housing placement, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, referrals to medical and mental health treatment, educational courses and spiritual counseling.

Goal: Raise $8 million to keep more homeless families off the streets and help them transition into permanent housing.
